Abstract

The article presents the results of an empirical study of value orientations and psychological well-being of Belarusian and Turkmen students.

The purpose of the study is to determine the relationship between value orientations and psychological well-being among Belarusian students and Turkmen students. The research objectives are: 1) to determine the value orientations of Belarusian students and Turkmen students, taking into account the gender factor; 2) to characterize the psychological well-being of Belarusian students and Turkmen students, taking into account the gender factor; 3) to identify the specificity of the relationship of value orientations and psychological well-being among Belarusian students and Turkmen students. The study involved 90 people (40 Belarusian students and 50 Turkmen students) studying at the Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno.

Research methods: “The value questionnaire” by S. Schwartz, “The scale of psychological well-being” K. Riff in the adaptation of Shevelenkova and Fesenko. The data were processed using the quartilization method, the Spearman rank correlation method, and the Mann-Whitney U-test. Statistical data processing was performed using the software package STATISTIKA 8.0.

Findings. The most significant value of respondents of both cultural groups is the value of “security”, and the least significant value is “conformity”. Belarusian students prefer to be guided by the value of “independence”, and Turkmen students prefer to use “hedonism”. The least significant value of Belarusians is the value of “tradition”, and the Turkmen – “universalism” and “stimulation”.

Statistically significant differences in respondents’ value orientations due to their cultural affiliation and gender factor were found.

Students of both cultural groups have psychological well-being and their indicators are on average. For Belarusians, such indicators of psychological well-being as “meaningfulness of life”, “man as an open system”, “environmental management” and “personal growth” are most significant, and for Turkmen – “goals in life”, “meaningfulness of life”, “environmental management” аnd “self-acceptance”.

Statistically significant relationships between psychological well-being and value orientations of Belarusian students and Turkmen students are revealed
