VALIDATION OF THE UKRAINIAN VERSION OF THE LIFE ORIENTATION TEST-REVISED – LOT-R
Abstract
The aim of the article is to adapt the LOT-R to the Ukrainian population and establish its psychometric properties. Research methods. Two bilingual translators performed forward and reverse translation of the stimulus material for the LOT-R. The sample consisted of 521 persons aged from 12 to 70 who are fluent in Ukrainian language. The study of the construct (convergent and discriminant) validity of the Ukrainian version of the LOT-R scale was carried out using methods that evaluate indicators of optimism (optimism and stability of life tasks), optimistic and pessimistic experiences and indicators of life stability (involvement, control, risk acceptance). A confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to verify the factor structure. The results. The acceptable fit of the two-factor model with the correlation of factors that have a moderate feedback (r = -0.575) and the good fit of the bifactor model with one general factor – dispositional optimism and two latent factors – optimism and pessimism were confirmed: χ² / df = 1.301 (p= 0.0027), CFI=0.998, TLI=0.992, RMSEA=0.024 SRMR=0.013. Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient is 0.68, McDonald’s omega is 0.70, which indicates sufficient internal consistency of the method. The construct validity of the method is confirmed by significant correlations with indicators of life sustainability (involvement, control and risk acceptance), connections at a high level of significance with indicators of optimism and sustainability of life tasks. This work presents the results of optimism research on female and male samples. Representatives of the male gender showed a higher level of optimism than representatives of the female gender, which can be explained both by the culturally specific nature of the population of Ukraine and by social threats against the background of military operations. Conclusions. The results of our study indicate the adequacy of the psychometric properties of the Ukrainian version of the LOT-R methodology, which can be an effective tool for diagnosing dispositional optimism and optimistic/pessimistic expectations in screening and clinical research.
