Abstract

The purpose of the article is to cover the results of an empirical study of the manifestations of the handicap complex in people with disabilities. The category of “handicap complex” refers to the property, the formation of the psyche, which is manifested in the reduction of social activity, limitation of the circle of communication of disabled, change of self-esteem and self-alignment, which acquires negative character.

Methods. For this purpose, we used the author’s questionnaire for the diagnosis of handicap, which allows to detect the degree of manifestation of the handicap complex in a disabled person. The questionnaire covers 5 diagnostic scales: communicability, level of self-esteem, level of self-control, emotional instability, vulnerability. The indicators of each psychodiagnostic scale are divided into three levels: high, medium, low. The research participants were disabled representatives of the following professions: industrial workers, agricultural workers, service workers, civil servants, education workers, health care workers, students, retirees, private entrepreneurs, former servicemen, unemployed, housewives. The survey included 517 people with disabilities of different nosology who live in 5 regions of Ukraine.

Results. Summarizing the results of the study, we have reason to say that as a whole, the handicap complex was found not only in 26 percent of the investigated, 45 percent of optants found the average level of handicap complex formation, and 29 percent of the disabled had a pronounced psychological neoplasm.

Conclusions. Аnalyzing the indicators of the handicap complex, depending on the professional orientation of the respondents, it was found that it is mostly retired, unemployed, former servicemen and housewives, while the rest of the respondents remain confident and self-sufficient. It is these categories of people with disabilities who are most affected by the psychological consequences of disability, which are manifested in the handicap. This is due to their relatively greater social isolation, inability to find another area for self-fulfillment.
