Purpose. The article aims to explain the personality transformation as a way of adaptation in the conditions of a long-term social crisis. The specific conditions for the development of individual psychological crises are explained against the background of combining the postmodern culture and the problems of the Ukrainian society formation.
Methods. The main theoretical concepts and results of empirical researches of Ukrainian scholars are analyzed and summarized, explaining personal transformations as a way of overcoming life obstacles.
Results. Three evolution stages of the scientific representations of personal transformations in the periods of life crisis are traced, which correspond to the general socio-historical development context: the classical stage, devoted to establishing the negative consequences of life obstacles and the possibilities of addressing them in a meaningful way; the nonclassical stage, when the crisis appears as a potentially useful resource of self-improvement and a condition for achieving personal maturity; the postnonclassical stage, in which the crisis is an inevitable and repetitive stage of life, which actualizes the internal mechanisms of conceptual interpretation of the experience gained. The postmodern culture and scientific paradigm require a rethinking of the personality as a subject of social relations and conscious activity, because the very nature of these relationships and activities has changed dramatically.
Conclusions. The idea is substantiated that resource opportunities for the emergence and overcoming of life crises through personal reorganization are laid in the nature of each person. On the ground of the conducted analysis, a list of tasks for psychological counseling is offered in the situation of a life crisis when the person’s adaptive resources are exhausted. These means ensure the progressive development and, at the same time, the prevention of personal destruction in a crisis environment. The path chosen by each person to cope with their own experiences determines the general advancement of society in overcoming the global crisis.
